PAINTING PAST PRESENT
A PAINTER'S CRAFT

Produced alongside the exhibition Painting Past Present: A Painters Craft at Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. The exhibition and publication looks at styles, materials and methods of painting, giving a historical and contemporary take on traditional techniques.

The 11 contemporary artists represented in the exhibition were invited to select paintings from the Laing collection that reflect their own perspective on the craft of painting to hang alongside their own work.

Paintings by contemporary artists Mali Morris, Emma Talbot, Paul Housley, Helen Baker, Laura Lancaster, Eleanor Moreton, Narbi Price, James Ryan, Helen Smith, Alli Sharma, and Sue Spark feature in the exhibition and book alonside historic works from the Laing’s collection by Frank Auerbach, Victor Pasmore and many others
