Ancestor (Transition) was made using the surrealist technique of decalcomania, with the aim of conjuring ancestral presences from Thompson's family tree. In a Studio International review of the exhibition The Medium is the Message, which was at the College of Psychic Studies in London earlier this year, Anna McNay described another work from Thompson's Ancestor series as 'the most beautiful work in this room – if not the entire show'.
