Luke Burton (b.1983, London) lives and works in London.
The concept of ambivalence - specifically how this plays out in the political and aesthetic spheres - is central to Burton's expanded painting practice. Portraits of senior Civil Servants are frequently deployed as a symbol of political ambivalence while contrasting stylistic registers suggest equivocation within the aesthetic realm.
He has exhibited at ICA, London; Turner Contemporary, Margate; National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh; PADA, Lisbon; Bosse and Baum Gallery, London; TJ Boulting Gallery, London; and Union Gallery, London
In 2019-20, Burton was Artist-in-residence and Visiting Fellow at Girton College, University of Cambridge and in 2023, he received the Abbey Fellowship in Painting at the British School at Rome.
