Carolina Ambida uses pastel colours as a method of activating her own and her viewers' senses between a mediated image and the resulting painting. Her approach does not, however, prescribe anything. Instead she talks about the joy of encountering the new and unexpected. Pastel colours offer a conducive atmosphere and evocation of a dream state where lines between known and unknown blur. Whilst Ambida is aware of the 'cute' overtones of the pastel universe (referring to the recent 'Cute' exhibition at the Courtauld), she believes we are more likely to get drawn into narratives where these tones are involved. They allow her to gently and subtly tease something out of an image, letting her own experiences colour her response. (Text by Lucy Cade-Stewart)
